Job Overview:
To ensure the effective technical management of an assigned fleet of tugs and barges, supporting safe, reliable, and cost-effective operations. The Technical Superintendent will oversee daily maintenance, technical troubleshooting, budget control, and compliance with maritime regulations. The role is critical in ensuring fleet availability and performance while fostering strong collaboration with crew, technical teams, and other stakeholders.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities:
1. Fleet Technical Management

- Supervise the maintenance, repair, and technical operations of the assigned fleet.
- Conduct regular inspections of vessels to assess condition and compliance with technical and safety standards.
- Ensure timely resolution of technical issues, minimizing downtime and operational delays.
- Monitor vessel performance metrics and recommend improvements to enhance efficiency.
2. Budget Management

- Prepare and manage maintenance and repair budgets for the assigned fleet.
- Control costs related to procurement of spares, equipment, and services while maintaining quality standards.
- Provide timely and accurate reports on budget performance to the Technical Manager.
3. Dry Docking and Repairs

- Plan and oversee dry docking and major repair activities, ensuring timely completion within budget.
- Coordinate with shipyards, vendors, and classification societies during dry docking and repair processes.
- Ensure that all technical activities align with regulatory requirements and company standards.
4. Safety and Compliance

- Ensure the fleet complies with national and international maritime regulations.
- Oversee safety protocols, audits, and risk assessments to maintain a safe operational environment.
- Maintain updated records of certifications, inspections, and audits for all assigned vessels.
5. Team and Crew Collaboration

- Collaborate with vessel crews to ensure proper execution of maintenance and repair plans.
- Provide technical guidance and training to enhance the competency of onboard engineers and technical teams.
- Support the Technical Manager in mentoring and managing technical personnel.
6. Stakeholder Engagement

- Act as a liaison between the fleet and external stakeholders such as classification societies, regulatory authorities, and vendors.
- Maintain professional relationships with suppliers to ensure the availability and quality of spare parts and services.
- Provide technical support and updates to management on fleet performance and issues.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Minimum Class 1 Certificate of Competency (Marine Engineer) or equivalent qualification.
- Prior experience as a Chief Engineer onboard tugs or sea-going vessels (preferred).
- Strong knowledge of technical and operational aspects of tug and barge fleets.
- Proven expertise in maintenance, repair, and dry-docking operations.
- Experience in preparing and managing budgets effectively.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills in high-pressure situations.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with vessel crews, technical teams, and stakeholders.
- Familiarity with maritime safety regulations and compliance standards.
